Record numbers of citizens are being diagnosed with depression and a burgeoning list of mental ‘illnesses’. The counselling and psychotherapy professions refuse to set themselves against the medicalisation of human experience and so will continue be part of the problem – destined to be ambulance chasing instead of truly helping alleviate the distress of ordinary people. And the individual practitioner must answer the question: Is any psychodiagnosis meaningful, or is it all harmful, as person-centred theory would have it?
